Call for Abstracts
The 2023 Call for Abstracts is officially open!
Submission Deadline – Friday 9th June
2023 Themes
- Emerging contaminants & landbank security
- Process emissions & the journey to net zero
- Advances in anaerobic digestion, biogas processing, thickening, dewatering & liquor treatment
- The circular economy & the role for nutrient recovery
- Innovating bioresources
- Advanced Thermal Conversion Processes
Background
Approaches to harnessing energy from sewage sludges and applying biosolids to land are well established and at the heart of the circular economy. Advanced anaerobic digestion and the valuable products of biogas and biomethane are key elements of net zero ambitions. Our understanding of process emissions in and around bioresources is growing, but the regulatory landscape and how the Industrial Emissions Directive will be implemented is unclear. Future outlets for biosolids are uncertain and we need to face up to the realities of emerging contaminants including PFAS and microplastics. Our industry is considering alternative processing options to recover nutrients and end routes including gasification and pyrolysis; but can these technologies deliver the reliability we require, at neutral cost and net zero?
This year’s European Biosolids & Bioresource Conference, as ever, focuses upon the pressing issues facing our industry and practical examples of how the industry is and can meet these challenges. We are now inviting submissions on the themes above.
Abstract Submission Deadline – 9th June 2023
Technology Suppliers
As this is a technical conference, we encourage papers that share operational experiences. If you are a technology supplier and would like to be considered for an oral presentation, your abstract should include details such as site specifics and performance data. Ideally, the abstract should be presented by an appropriate client.
Student and Early Career Professionals’* Poster Award
The award will be judged and presented during the conference and is open to students and early career professionals under 35 working in the bioresource and biowaste sectors.
This is an opportunity for you to showcase your work to over 300 industry professionals and be in with a chance of winning a monetary prize.
Attending conferences is a great way to improve your professional network and expand your knowledge of the industry. Students and early career professionals are also offered significantly reduced rates.
*Early career professionals must be: an individual working professionally in the wastewater sector for less than 3 years after graduation; or an academic/postgraduate/post doctorate in a permanent position in a UK institution (full or part time), with no more than three years of experience at lecturer level.

CIWEM & Aqua Enviro
We are delighted to announce that CIWEM will be collaborating with Aqua Enviro to publish a special issue of the Water and Environment Journal, which will include expanded versions of the papers presented at this year’s Biosolids conference.
Aqua Enviro events are well recognised and respected worldwide. These annual events act as a unique platform to disseminate technological, processes and science advancements in the interface between academia and industry in both water and wastewater areas, which fit perfectly with the scope of the Water and Environmental Journal.
