Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) is an innovative thermal process that transforms wet biomass, such as biosludge, into valuable carbon-rich products under high pressure and moderate temperatures. This presentation introduces the fundamental principles of HTC and highlights its unique advantages for biosludge treatment, including volume reduction, pathogen elimination, and energy recovery. EVAC began its HTC development journey in 2018, aiming to provide sustainable waste treatment solutions for cruise ships. With over 1,000 operational days across three pilot-scale plants and successful delivery of HTC systems to six vessels, EVAC has demonstrated the technology's reliability and efficiency in marine environment. We look into the mass and energy balance of the Evac HTC solution, showcasing the energy-efficient design of EVAC's marine-engineered systems. The presentation will also explore how EVAC plans to scale this proven technology for land-based applications, targeting municipal wastewater treatment and biogas plants and biosludge originated from there. In summary we will show: the energy balance, development story of HTC and how Evac is ready to co-operate with UK customers to push HTC forward in the challenging biosludge treatment segment.
