Testbed Ellinge is a project investigating the pros and cons of sludge pyrolysis and sludge biochar usage. One activity in the project is to run a pilot plant at the Ellinge Wastewater Treatment Plan in Eslöv, Sweden. In January 2025 a steam dryer and pyrolysis unit, a HECLA Setores 300 HTE from Aquagreen, was started. The pilot receives dewatered sludge from thirty different Swedish WWTPs in plastic bags. Its capacity is 80-100 kg dewatered sludge/h. The pyrolysis oven is operated at temperatures in between 500-900 °C to investigate the effect of temperature on e.g. the heavy metal and organic micropollutant removal of the sludge residual, the sludge biochar. The particle size distribution of the different sludge biochars is determined by sieving. The first results from the first eight months of pilot studies will be presented at the conference.
