Name
Advancing biosolids compliance through rapid on-site microbiological testing
Description

Wastewater utilities must demonstrate microbiological compliance while maintaining operational efficiency, resilience and confidence in biosolids reuse. However, conventional laboratory-based testing can delay access to actionable data, limiting the ability to identify non-compliance risks and intervene before disruption occurs. When a compliance issue arises, utilities may be forced to quarantine batches of biosolids, divert sludge streams, pause digesters and carry out extensive remedial investigations, all potentially costing tens of thousands of pounds per week.

Technologies for automated, on-site, microbiological testing such as IDEXX Tecta™ enable faster and more frequent results and information, using the same enzyme-substrate detection employed by standard microbiological methods.

Rapid onsite analysis, performed by non-laboratory personnel, can allow utilities to test more frequently and to identify operational issues that may lead to a compliance failure well in advance. This testing can create a rich operational dataset that can even allow utilities to correlate microbiological trends with process conditions, maintenance activities, and environmental events.

On-site microbiology testing can shift biosolids monitoring from periodic compliance verification toward continuous operational awareness. This approach may strengthen regulatory assurance, reduce avoidable remediation, and support better-informed decisions that protect public health, environmental performance, and operational continuity.
