Name
Innovative polymer dosing to enhance primary settlement in wastewater treatment
Description
As population equivalent increases, and environmental regulation becomes more stringent, many wastewater treatment plants are approaching capacity while facing growing pressure to reduce energy use, carbon emissions, and environmental impact. To maximize performance from existing assets and avoid capital-intensive expansion, Solenis is investigating the application of novel chemistries to support more efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment.
Historically, optimization focused on individual treatment stages in isolation. Solenis adopted a whole-plant approach, recognizing that enhancing upstream process performance can deliver cascading operational and sustainability benefits across the treatment train. Key benefits include reduced secondary treatment energy demand, improved sludge capture for anaerobic digestion, increased renewable energy recovery, and improved downstream dewatering efficiency. These improvements align with Solenis sustainability commitments, ensuring customers meet or exceed their sustainability goals and comply with environmental guidelines.
In collaboration with Anglian Water, Solenis conducted full-scale plant trials using an innovative high-molecular-weight cationic copolymer dispersed in a low-molecular-weight cationic polymer to enhance primary settlement. Over a three-month trial period, results demonstrated significant improvements in settlement rates, 65% lower TSS vs crude, reduced turbidity, and decreased biological oxygen demand by over 40%, compared to crude, indicating the potential for enhanced operational efficiency and sustainability outcomes.
