CambiTHP C, the continuous Cambi THP
Description
CambiTHP C is a continuous thermal hydrolysis platform designed for small- to medium-sized wastewater treatment facilities (30,000–400,000 population equivalent), offering a compact, cost-effective solution for waste activated sludge (WAS)-only and intermediate configurations. The system operates at high dry solids concentrations (16–23% DS), minimizing steam demand through direct steam-sludge mixing in a dynamic mixer, followed by hydrolysis at 140–165°C and 6 barg for 30 minutes. Cooling is achieved via dilution, eliminating the need for dedicated cooling equipment.
The platform’s modular design (C1–C4 models) supports capacities from 5.0 to 32.8 tDS/day, with a typical footprint of 12 m × 2.5 m and minimal on-site installation time. CambiTHP C enhances sludge dewaterability, reduces biosolids volumes, and increases biogas production, lowering operational costs and carbon footprint. The resulting configuration reduces equipment complexity, minimizes maintenance-intensive components, and improves operational robustness. The simplified heat recovery and cooling philosophy is particularly attractive for facilities where only a portion of the total sludge production is hydrolysed. In many installations, available CHP waste heat can provide the full steam demand, reducing the need for supplementary energy sources. The paper presents the design philosophy, application range, and key engineering principles behind THP-C, Cambi’s new continuous thermal hydrolysis platform.
