Sludge drying reed beds (SDRBs) are widely recognised as a low-energy, nature-based route for sludge dewatering and stabilisation, but their deployment at programme scale remains less commonly reported. This paper presents Egis’ experience supporting Uisce Éireann through the Inlet Works, Storm and Sludge (IWSS) Programme, which is addressing asset deficiencies across 60 wastewater treatment plants, typically serving 500 - 14,000 PE communities. The paper will examine how SDRBs were selected, sized and integrated within constrained live wastewater sites as part of a wider upgrade programme covering asset assessment, option development, planning, detailed design, construction supervision and handover. Particular focus will be given to the technical and operational drivers for adopting SDRBs: reduced mechanical complexity, low energy demand, resilient sludge storage and stabilisation, reduced sludge haulage frequency, and improved flexibility around increasingly constrained landbank application windows. At scale, the programme positions Uisce Éireann at the forefront of nature-based bioresources infrastructure, demonstrating how decentralised sludge treatment can contribute to circular nutrient management while reducing operational carbon and whole-life cost. The lessons are directly transferable to the UK AMP8 context, where energy efficiency, low-OPEX delivery, biodiversity gain and nature-based solutions are now central to wastewater investment planning.
