A national bioresources strategy for Ireland: optimising sludge treatment, GHG reduction and resource recovery
Description
As Ireland’s national water utility, Uisce Éireann (UÉ) provides drinking water and wastewater treatment services nationwide, supporting a growing population while protecting Ireland’s environment and rich biodiversity. To enable a consistent, sustainable and resilient approach to bioresources management, UÉ has developed a draft National Bioresources Strategy (NBioS). This incorporates standardised methodologies and technologies in alignment with regulatory developments, such as the recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, and its ambitions for net zero carbon and circular economy principles. Ireland faces several challenges in bioresources management including evolving legislation, achieving sustainability ambitions, landspreading availability due to climate pressures and emerging contaminants that may restrict reuse options. Additionally, UÉ currently treats c70,000 tDS annually, with around 75% of plants serving populations below 2,000 PE, leading to high transport volumes, operational costs and emissions. To address these constraints, UÉ, in partnership with Jacobs, is implementing a centralised model comprising Satelite Dewatering Centres (SDCs) and Regional Bioresource Centres (RBCs), supported by a Biogas Optimisation Programme (BOP). Advanced treatment technologies (including thermal hydrolysis, plug flow digestion configuration and pasteurisation) are being evaluated to maximise volatile solids destruction, biogas yield and pathogen reduction. Complementary innovations, including Jacobs’ Microbial Hydrolysis Process (MHP) and Dune (a low-energy biodrying), are also being explored to enhance bioresource reduction, improve transport efficiency and increase overall system resilience
