Rethinking digestion: the role of anaerobic processes in a thermal future
Description

Anaerobic digestion and land application have been the mainstay of biosolids processing in the UK for decades. However, increased concern over emerging contaminants and public perception related to food chain safety have called the future of land application into question. Advanced thermal process (ATP) technologies like gasification and pyrolysis are demonstrated to destroy PFAS and reduce microplastics from the biosolids product remaining after ATP treatment. So, for wastewater treatment works with existing anaerobic digestion that are contemplating a future with ATP, what are the costs and considerations of keeping or abandoning digestion? This presentation will explore cost and non-cost factors for a case study facility implementing ATP with existing anaerobic digestion or without. In addition to capital and operating costs, the following will be explored: energy balance, sustainability including greenhouse gas inventory and fugitive emissions, process reliability and outlet redundancy. Attendees will gain practical insights on the pros and cons of maintaining anaerobic digestion with ATP.
