Challenges to consider for “stand-alone” regional biosolids centres
Description

South West Water intend to rationalise their existing bioresources assets, comprising conventional digestion and liming sites, replacing them with advanced anaerobic digestion in a large Centralised Regional Bioresources Centre (CRBC). Whilst ideally the CRBC would be co-located on a wastewater treatment works (WwTW), various significant constraints at potential candidate sites mean that none are suitable. Consequently, the CRBC is to be a “stand-alone” bioresources site, but the absence of an adjacent WwTW presents numerous design challenges. Although potable water will be required for steam generation systems, all other process water will have to be supplied from treated liquors. Indeed, all liquors will need to be treated to a high quality, suitable for discharge to a local watercourse – and this strongly disadvantages thermal hydrolysis on a stand-alone site. The design of the CRBC aims to maximise energy recovery and revenue, using the biogas in a “hybrid” combination of CHP engines (to power the site and provide recoverable heat) and a “gas-to-grid” biomethane facility to minimise TOTEX. Financial reasons mean that phased delivery of the CRBC will be required, with early operation using CHP engines only (with gas-to-grid added in subsequent phases).
