Thames Water manages the largest bioresource business in the UK, and arguably one of the most complex bioresources networks with 25 sludge treatment centres processing more than 1,100 tonnes of dry solids each day across London and the Thames Valley. Faced with IED compliance, rising sludge yields and the sector's Net Zero 2030 commitment, incremental improvements to planning were never going to be enough.
This presentation sets out how Thames Water, working with Business Modelling Applications (BMA), delivered an industry-first Integrated Bioresources Systems Planning approach using the Decisio™ platform. What sets the work apart is connection: strategic, tactical and operational decisions are made within a single data environment, built on an end-to-end value chain model of the entire sludge network.
We will show how the approach linked a 25-year "North Star" asset strategy to AMP8 and AMP9 delivery and to day-to-day operational scheduling, with AI-assisted optioneering testing thousands of investment pathways against future uncertainty. The result is a replicable blueprint for closing the gap most companies face, where strategy, capital planning and operations are planned in isolation.
