Biosolids to biochar in Ireland: pathways for circular resource recovery

Uisce Éireann (UÉ) are facing environmental, societal and regulatory challenges which could restrict established pathways for biosolids to land in Ireland. To address key strategic drivers related to emerging contaminants and sustainability, UÉ are evaluating advanced thermal conversion (ATC) technologies as part of their draft National Bioresources Strategy. AtkinsRéalis supported UÉ in the identification and optioneering of ATC technologies for a demonstration trial at a selected site, with pyrolysis emerging as the preferred option, offering key benefits including contaminant destruction and opportunities for decarbonisation. A core element of the study was the assessment of sewage sludge–derived biochar and its reuse potential within the Irish economy, focusing on knowledge gaps and opportunities for targeted experimental trials using biochar from a local demonstration facility. Four priority use-cases were evaluated: land application, micropollutant removal from wastewater, incorporation into construction aggregates, and use as a solid fuel. Each option was reviewed in terms of potential benefits, technical challenges, and regulatory considerations within the Irish context. The outputs of this feasibility assessment and UÉ’s planned demonstration trial will provide key insights into the future of biochar recovery and use in Ireland, supporting pathways toward next-generation, circular sludge treatment opportunities.
