Circular ammonia recovery for a low-carbon wastewater future
Description
At advanced digestion sites, sidestream ammonia removal is often required to avoid overloading wastewater processes and meet increasingly stringent ammonia permits. Conventional liquor treatment can generate substantial nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions which poses a key threat to decarbonisation. The UK also imports 60-80% of its nitrogen-based fertiliser, and so there is a compelling need for utilities to explore ammonia recovery to align with their decarbonisation commitments while enabling nutrient recovery. To address these challenges, Severn Trent are assessing the feasibility, viability and desirability of ammonia recovery, while exploring reuse markets, and navigating regulatory barriers to an End-of-Waste classification. A two-stage trial is in progress to extract ammonia from dewatering liquors in the form of ammonium sulphate, by deploying a thermal air stripping and scrubbing process. The trial aims to establish a pathway toward scaling ammonia recovery for wider adoption: a proof of concept installation followed by a fully integrated demonstration plant to ensure robust evidence gathering for regulatory and commercial decisions. Operational learnings and ammonium sulphate samples obtained from the trial could position ammonia recovery as a low carbon, scalable, and cost-effective solution that caters for population growth whilst supporting compliance, nutrient security and net zero objectives for the water sector.
