Planning the implementation of a sewage sludge pyrolysis demonstration plant at Crossness STW.
Description
Thames Water aims to deliver the first continuously operating, sludge-fed UK-based pyrolysis demonstration plant. Pyrolysis can be used to maximise the value recovery from biosolids; ensuring a circular economy and to diversify from biosolids recycling to agricultural land. The project, funded from the Ofwat Innovation Fund, has met a major milestone by appointing AquaGreen as the OEM and Material Resources as the delivery partner marking the transition from procurement into mobilisation. The Environment Agency has granted the administrative variation to the existing permit to enable R&D trials under Standard Rule SR2024, representing a significant regulatory milestone for the project. Looking ahead, the continued mobilisation (detailed engineering, ordering of long-lead components, and completing enabling works at Crossness STW) will support installation in late 2026 and commissioning in early 2027.
