From energy drain to energy gain: pioneering cold anaerobic solutions under challenging conditions – Q4 2026 update
Description

Thames Water is driving innovation with a £7 million OFWAT-funded Water Breakthrough Challenge project: “Transforming the Energy Balance of Wastewater Treatment”. Our research explores a game-changing approach using an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor for COD removal, paired with an ELIQUO ELOVAC® degassing system to extract biogas.

The pilot plant first went live in October 2025, delivering valuable insights prior to a temporary shutdown in December to implement improvements. Up and running again since August, we are now producing increasing amounts of high-quality biogas. We’ll share detailed operational updates, learnings and scientific insights to date.
