Achieving IED TVOC limits in AMP8
Description
This paper looks at the optioneering work undertaken by United Utilities and its Design Partners to evaluate different options for achieving compliance with 20 mg/m3 TVOC Emission Limit Value (ELV) set in IED permits. It will run through the various results gathered from measuring TVOC levels (including methane) in the inlet and outlet of United Utilities Odour Control Assets, as well as methane levels for various post digestion assets. This has then been taken alongside RBP data to inform theoretical methane production rates for different configurations of post digestion assets for 2 new AAD facilities to be built within United Utilities.
A Multi Criteria Decision Analysis undertaken to compare the operational, process safety, environmental impacts of different methane abatement & prevention strategies. Some of the strategies considered included Regenerative Thermal Oxidation, Flash Aeration, Vacuum Degassing, Connecting Post Digestion Storage Tanks to Biogas system and longer hydraulic retention times. The presentation will present potential future configurations beyond AMP8 upon development of more technologies to mitigate methane emissions through the sludge treatment process.
