The Schijnpoort wwtp in Belgium managed by Aquafin acts as a regional sludge treatment hub where sludge is digested and dried before it is sent to incineration for final disposal. Approx 50 ton DS/day is treated at the plant. As part of a modernization & energy efficiency plan for the Schijnpoort sludge line, Cambi supplied a “Solidstream” process consisting of a post digestion Thermal Hydrolysis Process followed by direct dewatering. This process achieves high dry solids final dewatering and produces a centrate rich in biodegradable organics that is returned to the digesters to provide digester heat and additional biogas. The Solidstream facility allows stopping the existing drying operation and eliminates the use of natural gas. The Solidstream facility was put into operation in February 2026. First results on volatile solids removal, biogas production and dewatering performance are presented.
